IT’S BETTER TO START OUT UGLY

Premiering at The Lab, San Francisco

Asher Hartman and Gawdafful National Theater present a “no time for oblivion” thirst trap for queer psychosis, aging and dementia, fascistic white gay nuttery, near ventriloquism, fake theater and untranslatable gut goo of buried antipathies neatly played out on a hairy stage. Starring red hot actors and aesthetes José Luis Blondet, Michael Bonnabel, and Philip Littell, and written and directed by miniature puppeteer Asher Hartman, this 90 -minute slippery ghost town of a play promises to leave you shaking your head at the nearest wine bar and taqueria. Graphic design by Jinha Song.

MEDITATION & CONVERSATION
Skeletal Readings: A meditation and conversation with Asher Hartman and Rossen Ventzislavov
Wednesday, December 5, 2018, 7-9pm, FREE, RSVP
Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA)

As part of the art journal X-tra magazine’s winter launch event I will be leading a non-acting theatrical exercise to strip the body to its imaginary skeletal form. I will then be in conversation with philosopher and cultural critic Rossen Ventzislavov using his article for X-tra’s Winter issue as a point of departure. Other topics of discussion will include: the hegemony of narrative (in the theater and beyond), the gravitational pull of reductive identity (persons, personas, etc.), the contemporary cultural defanging of criticism and criticality, and maybe even the vagaries of gender.

FILM
OPUNTIA (2017) by David Fenster

I am featured in the latest film by David Fenster Opuntia, which is based on the writings of 16th century conquistador turned shamanic healer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, an early European explorer of the "New World" and one of the strangest figures in U.S. history.

Cabeza de Vaca is an unusual figure, so I used unconventional techniques to tell his story: I collaborated with psychic Asher Hartman and practiced mediumship to channel the spirit of Cabeza de Vaca who chose to communicate through the prickly pear cacti, also known as the Opuntia, the plant that saved him from starvation.   David Fenster, Director

They might think of their exhibition at The Meow as a performance, or it could be simply something they do to make some money. The role of The Meow is to host and to help.
